Cheapy Craft

Remember when I said you can get some crafts for super cheap? Well, Lily and I made a trip to Michael's last week to restock our craft bin and found some fun little project. These mosaic critters were only $1 each! The girls really had a good time making them and Lily is now saying the turtle is her pet turtle and she feeds it and puts it in her play kitchen sink so it can be in the water. Very cute! Ella made a kitty and started a monkey.

(Random craft note: If anyone else attempts these cute little critters, I attached the "extra" parts--limbs, eyes, ears, etc--with a hot glue gun. I've found that elmer's glue does not work well with this foam material.)

Those last two are Ella working on her monkey and her monkey impression. :-)

And we also got a Foamies egg decorating kit. Lily decorated a few eggs while Ella worked on her monkey (which she inevitably grew bored with and did not finish). We'll probably do a few more of these this week and then hang them up on our deck window.

If you can't tell by now, almost all of Lily's artwork consists of smiley faces. :-)

"Making" Summer

Last weekend it was the beginning of warm weather around here. Yeah! The snow melted, everyone could be outside. It was probably 45-50 degrees. Andrew was out with the girls and when I asked what they were up to, he said, "Ella says we're "making" summer." Her idea was that we had to clean up all the snow and ice in the yard to make way for summer. She also thought if we got rid of all the snow in the yard, then we could get out the pool. LOL! We had to explain to her that the pool was a summer thing and even though it was warmer outside, we had to have spring before summer. So we have to wait for it to get quite a bit warmer first. She was still excited that she could be outside and continued on with her "work" of making summer.

The girls are still wearing their snowpants even though it was fairly warm because everything was very soggy. They were soaked though by the time they came in.

Spring Photos

I recently bought some different fabrics to use as backgrounds for my photography. I set everything up and was going to play with it to take pictures of the kids' dolls. When I had asked Ella and Lily if they wanted to be my models, they didn't seem interested in having their photos taken. But of course, once I got everything in place they got excited, especially when I told them they could put on their pretty dresses for the photos. Here's a few that I got:

Those terrific smiles are thanks to Andrew acting like a goofball behind me. ;-) He also got in on some of the photos. :-)

I love this one of Andrew. I told him he could use it for his headshot. :-)

These two pictures of the three of them just crack me up. Here, Andrew is giving Lily attention and Ella is trying to get his attention back. And then, Lily is blowing raspberries and Ella doesn't like the sound. Typical siblings. :-)

The Ella and Lily Report

Sidenote: I am accompanying this post with some photos I took of Ella "reading"...the post is about Lily too, but I don't have any photos I could really use for her, so you just get Ella. She wanted me to take photos of her one day, so I had her "read" me Pinkalicious--she knows the story by heart. And then she likes to be "me" and pretend to read. So the photos of her in the chair are of her pretending to be me. :-)

Andrew and I went to the girls' spring parent/teacher conferences last week. What a treat it was! First, we visited with Ms. Debbie, Ella's teacher. Ella has made HUGE strides since we had her fall conference. At the beginning of the year, she could only identify six letters of the alphabet and now there are only 7 she has trouble with!! She is doing great recognizing the rest of the letters. She'll see a word and tell us each of the letters and then want to know what it says. She can sight-read several words. She does a great job of "reading" to us if she knows the story.

She's doing really well with recognizing her numbers as well and can pattern. Most of the kids can only do an ABABAB pattern but Ella can do ABCABCABC. She also continues at what she's doing even if the task proves difficult for her. Her fine and gross motor skills are spot on. And I have to say, this next comment was the most exciting for me! "Ella is extremely talented in Art! She takes the directions to the project and always ups it a few levels. Please place Ella in art classes of all types, she truly excels! It's her love, and creative juices flow left and right. She is someone who stands out on EVERY art project. I enjoy watching Ella create!!!" WOW! Fun, right? Just a little background, Ella's preschool teacher was an art teacher for all grades before she became a preschool teacher so she really knows what she's talking about. I suppose I should probably tell Ms. Debbie about my art history background and that we highly encourage the artistic process in this household. But I do agree that I think Ella is very talented! :-)

Oh, and Ella is in this Fancy Nancy mode right now. She LOVES the books by Jane O'Connor. She will dress up in multiple layers and accessories. Here are two self portraits Ella did. The first is from the fall and the second is her self portrait as Fancy Nancy complete with this purple hat with a flower that she wore to school a couple times (click artwork to make image larger).

Oh, and Ms. Debbie was very supportive about our decision to put Ella into full-day kindergarten next year. She thinks she will do great and that it is the perfect thing for her.

After Ella's conference we hopped on over to Ms. Joanie's table to hear about Lily. She is doing great as well and has really blossomed from this fall when she would cry everyday when I would drop her off. She loves going to school now and every night at dinner when we talk about our favorite things of the day, school is always Lily's favorite thing (on the days she goes). Now, since Lily is only three, her class isn't as "advanced" as Ella's, obviously. They are more concerned about learning social skills at this point and just beginning to introduce letters and numbers. Lily can count to 5 using one-to-one counting. She draws and builds a construction to represent something specific. She is beginning to learn to write her name. She does really well with sharing with other kids and compromising with them. And like Ella, art is her favorite thing. The first thing she does every day is head for the art table. She also is able to identify her colors and shapes really well. They tested her by asking her to follow 2-step directions (find the yellow crayon and color the square). She got all of them correct and then drew little hats on all the snowmen that were holding the shapes. ;-)

Here is her "writing" her name at the beginning of the year when she had no clue about the letters. And then now! I think that's a great improvement!

We talked about Lily's teacher next year who will be Ms. Deborah (Lily will be going three mornings Tu-Wed-Th next year). Ms. Deborah is very creative and thinks outside the box which Ms. Joanie thinks will be great for Lily and that Lily will enjoy being in her class. Ms. Debbie was also excited to hear that Lily will most likely be in her class year after next.

Lily's self-portraits are to the right. Top one is from the fall and the bottom one is from February. :-)

After Lily's conference, we then met with Ella's school speech therapist (yes, we were at the school for an hour and a half having compliments showered on us about our kids). Her therapist loves Ella to death and thinks she is just the nicest, sweetest kid. She said it will be hard to say good-bye to her this spring. Ella has met all of the goals set forth last spring and even though she could probably be discharged from speech at school, we are going to have her at least meet with a new therapist at the elementary school just so she can be in the system and can make sure she doesn't slide backward during the summer when she is not seeing a therapist three times a week at school.

Anyways, all wonderful news! We were so proud of our girls and I have to say I sort of felt like I was getting a report card too. Since I stay at home and feel like it is my job (and more my responsibility since I am home with them all day) to take care of the girls. It's very validating when I hear how terrific they are doing in school. Of course, Andrew has something to do with it too. I'll give him a little credit. ;-) We just hope they continue to do so well and love school in the future!

Holly's Arts and Crafts Corner

I haven't posted any art projects recently. So I just thought I'd throw a couple ideas out there for you.

If you are looking for some very inexpensive art materials, keep your eyes peeled for things at Target's One Spot area. That's the dollar area just inside the front door. Sometimes you can get really great stuff there for $1!

I got these picture frame kits there. They included the frame, glitter glue, rhinestones and other stickers. For ONE dollar! That's a REALLY good deal. If you bought all of the stuff included individually at Michael's it would cost you $7-10 for each frame set. This was a perfect project for my girls. They each created a frame for Nana Mary to take home with her. She's going to put a picture of each of the girls in their frame. Cute, right? And it's kind of a memory of their artwork at their current age.

I've also found little scrapbook paper sets with a good amount of paper in various themed patterns. We've used those to create little projects. Lily came up with this one all on her own! She just cut up the papers to make them into people. And attached the limbs by using stickers. How creative! I love this! And there's no messy glue.
I've seen card making kits there as well. Your kids could make the cards, or just use the materials in other art projects. You can always find cheap marker, pen, and notebook sets there too. Michael's has a similar dollar area with art projects, but they are usually character-specific (ie: Tinkerbell, Princesses, Cars, etc). I've been able to find more generic art materials at Target. So take a look next time you're there and see what you can find to help your kiddos expand their creativity.

While Andrew is away...the kiddos will play

I thought I would do a post to show what we do around here when Andrew is off gallivanting to Super Bowls and Gatorade shoots with sports celebrities. :-)

Our lives certainly aren't as exciting. But we do stay busy. Besides school, playdates, swim lessons, speech, gym class, trips to the library, bookstore and grocery store:

There's smiles.

And kisses.

And playing nice together.

And tears, pouting and whining! ;-)

There's laying around and cuddling. (I just love Lily's adoring look at Ella here).

And naps!

And of course, I'm a really good mom who never lets her kids jump on the bed and take pictures of them while they are doing it. ;-) Seriously, look how high Ella is in that second picture. Don't worry, no children were harmed in the taking of these photos.

We also have visits from Nana Mary and Papi Dave sometimes when Andrew is out of town. Thanks Mom and Dave for all your help at the end of January!! I really appreciate it! And the girls had a great time!

I should also mention thanks to my Dad and Clare for all the times they help us out and watch the girls too! They don't get as much credit here because we see them often and usually I'm off doing something and not around to take photos of them with the girls. I will have to try and be better about that! :-)

Family Movie Night 2009

This is just a housekeeping post for me. I like to keep track of the movies we watch with the kids. Hey, if anyone has any great ideas, I would love some. I am having a hard time coming up with some. We tend to see most of the animated movies that come out. It's live action (or real people) movies that I have a hard time coming up with. I feel like there are some good family movies out there that I'm totally missing or have forgotten about. I've browsed around on Netflix, but that didn't help me that much.
